This is weirldy feel good for a story about a person from a dystopian world of elitist horror。 Oscar Isaacs narration is fantastic and he seems to be having a lot of fun expressing impotent white male arrogance and petulant rage。 It's very short but the piece cheered me up on an otherwise bad day。 This is weirldy feel good for a story about a person from a dystopian world of elitist horror。 Oscar Isaacs narration is fantastic and he seems to be having a lot of fun expressing impotent white male arrogance and petulant rage。 It's very short but the piece cheered me up on an otherwise bad day。 。。。more

This was a short read read, I listened to it on audible and it took less than an hour start to finish 。。 not really sure what to say but for a short read I absolutely loved it! Such an engaging, interesting and thought provoking read that packs quite the punch ! I will definitely be reading more from the Forward collection!

I loved this novella。 I don't think I've read anything quite like it, and I enjoy a skilfully executed surprise。The second person perspective works well as a tool to build suspense before the reveal。 First it distances the reader by imposing the narrative voice on you, with all the prejudices and misconceptions that accompany it, and then it pulls you right into the action as the unseen and unvoiced protagonist takes control of his own destiny。 The narrator's casual misogyny and racism put me of I loved this novella。 I don't think I've read anything quite like it, and I enjoy a skilfully executed surprise。The second person perspective works well as a tool to build suspense before the reveal。 First it distances the reader by imposing the narrative voice on you, with all the prejudices and misconceptions that accompany it, and then it pulls you right into the action as the unseen and unvoiced protagonist takes control of his own destiny。 The narrator's casual misogyny and racism put me off at first - I wondered if I was reading a sci fi written by a white man in the 1940s - but I'll never mistrust Jemisin again。 She clearly knows what she's doing。I can't say too much more without spoiling the surprise - just read this story。The only bit that didn't ring true for me is post-climate-emergency Earth as utopia, but maybe I'm just a cynic。 。。。more

Nicely done, but given how talented N。K。 Jemisin is, I felt it was almost a bit basic。 Jason Isaacs does a great job on the narration though。 Worth the time to read/listen but nothing truly remarkable。

I liked the creativity/style of this story where it's narrated from the AI perspective but focuses on a human MC。 It is a short story, so the message is on the nose, but I loved the way the character development was shown through an external POV。 It was a pretty cool concept。 I don't view it as Jemisin's best work because it lacked her typical nuanced characterization/world-building。 Nevertheless, I gave it 4 stars because it's in Amazon's KU program。 (I take retail price into consideration when I liked the creativity/style of this story where it's narrated from the AI perspective but focuses on a human MC。 It is a short story, so the message is on the nose, but I loved the way the character development was shown through an external POV。 It was a pretty cool concept。 I don't view it as Jemisin's best work because it lacked her typical nuanced characterization/world-building。 Nevertheless, I gave it 4 stars because it's in Amazon's KU program。 (I take retail price into consideration when rating my reads -- it's unfair to expect the same quality from a $4 eBook that you do from a $15 purchase)。 。。。more

It's a very well written and clever story, as Jemisin has accostumed us。 It's purpose and moral are very clear but doesn't detract from the great work presented。 It's a very well written and clever story, as Jemisin has accostumed us。 It's purpose and moral are very clear but doesn't detract from the great work presented。 。。。more

MehConceptually very interesting, but a clunky story。 Worth the 20 minutes to read it just for the concept - obviously relevant。

Amazing and oh so timelyThis is deep on so many levels and telling of our current trajectory。 Its not hard to do, less greed and more compassion。 There is more than enough for EVERYONE。

Timely in 2021Powerful imagery in this story。 If we could just set the greed aside, perhaps there would be hope for humanity。

Loved。 Yup yup yup ‼️‼️ 11/10。 You already know, Madame NK Jemisin, simply does not disappoint- especially not in shorts!! Loved it。 I thought I knew where this might go, having read her other works, but I was pleasantly surprised, more than once。 Definitely recommend

I liked this, though like a parable it was a bit like a crashing anvil in terms of delivering the message- I say that even as I agreed with the message。 The obviousness took away from the humor。 That being said the structure was interesting - like THE SEVENTH PERFECTION, and worked well with audio。

I’ve struggled with this review, mainly because this is a story not quite like any I’ve read before。 At first the writing style and unusual way the story is laid out put me off。 But by the end of it I loved what I was reading, and appreciated N。K。 Jemisin for her approach to the telling of this story。“Emergency Skin” is the third of the six stories in the Forward Collection that I’ve read, and the one that drew me to the collection in the first place。 The story involves an explorer from another I’ve struggled with this review, mainly because this is a story not quite like any I’ve read before。 At first the writing style and unusual way the story is laid out put me off。 But by the end of it I loved what I was reading, and appreciated N。K。 Jemisin for her approach to the telling of this story。“Emergency Skin” is the third of the six stories in the Forward Collection that I’ve read, and the one that drew me to the collection in the first place。 The story involves an explorer from another planet sent to Earth to collect something that will help keep his society functioning。 A society which is made up of people who abandoned Earth generations ago。 He is expecting death, destruction, and savagery when he returns to our planet。 What he finds is something that makes him question everything he’s ever known。This is an imaginatively told tale that has a clear message。 The social and political themes in this story may be considered heavy handed to some readers, but overall “Emergency Skin” is a unique and beautiful tale, as well as an important one。This was my first read from N。K。 Jemisin, but it will not be the last。 。。。more

Okay, so I did enjoy this。 Which makes me happy since I DNFd the Fifth Season and I was upset about it because it was one of my most anticipated reads。 However, I really enjoyed this take on the future of our planet and our race。 The only criticism I have is that I wish it was an actual novel and not a short story。 And, honestly, I'm starting to think it's just me having an issue with short stories。 That issue just being that I mostly love them and just want them to be longer。 But yes, that is m Okay, so I did enjoy this。 Which makes me happy since I DNFd the Fifth Season and I was upset about it because it was one of my most anticipated reads。 However, I really enjoyed this take on the future of our planet and our race。 The only criticism I have is that I wish it was an actual novel and not a short story。 And, honestly, I'm starting to think it's just me having an issue with short stories。 That issue just being that I mostly love them and just want them to be longer。 But yes, that is my lazy, late night review! 。。。more

2nd read in the Forward collection and N。K。 Jemisin doesn't disappoint, and the audio book was narrated by Jason Isaacs which didn't hurt。 This story is written in 2nd person from an AI sending an alien like being to earth to retrieve a set of samples necessary for their survival。 When they arrive things don't go as expected。 2nd read in the Forward collection and N。K。 Jemisin doesn't disappoint, and the audio book was narrated by Jason Isaacs which didn't hurt。 This story is written in 2nd person from an AI sending an alien like being to earth to retrieve a set of samples necessary for their survival。 When they arrive things don't go as expected。 。。。more

The third instalment in the Forward collection is written in a very interesting style, which is very effective in a short story, but does outstay its welcome after a while。 Still, that is the most enjoyable aspect of Emergency Skin。 The story itself comes off as rather immature。 There are the good guys – who are oh so good, so good and amazing and wonderful and have figured out that all will be well if we only decide to care for each other – and the bad guys – who are oh so evil in every conceiv The third instalment in the Forward collection is written in a very interesting style, which is very effective in a short story, but does outstay its welcome after a while。 Still, that is the most enjoyable aspect of Emergency Skin。 The story itself comes off as rather immature。 There are the good guys – who are oh so good, so good and amazing and wonderful and have figured out that all will be well if we only decide to care for each other – and the bad guys – who are oh so evil in every conceivable way and practice eugenics and have exterminated all women and … – and it all quickly devolves into caricature。 It has very little to do with actual human behaviour。 In the end, the only interesting idea – from a literary more than philosophical point of view, is the AI。 A pared down version of the story, leaving out the platitudes, might have made for a very cool little miniature。 As it is, it is comically heavy handed and leaves the bitter taste of extremism in my mouth。 The idea that “the world will suddenly be perfect if only we rid ourselves of this specific group of people” has only ever led to one thing。 。。。more

N。K。 Jemisin is a BossThis is the 3rd installment of the Forward Collection of short stories on Amazon, and definitely the best I’ve read so far。 Emergency Skin explores the question of just what it would take to heal our disintegrating planet。 Truly original and deep, Jemisin shows us that kindness and selflessness is the only way FORWARD。

Six billion people working toward a goal together is much more effective than a few dozen scrabbling for themselves。”There is logic to this, but we 。 。 。 we deny it。 We cannot accept 。 。 。“That’s why the people of Earth talk down to you, younger brother。 That’s why they treat you like the quaint, harmless throwback that you are。 All these centuries and your people haven’t figured out such a simple, basic thing。”No。“Or maybe the Founder-clans and technorati don’t want you to figure it out。 Because then where would they be? Not gods among us, just other bright lights among many。 Not kings。 Just selfish men。”(hide spoiler)] 。。。more
